Obesity
New research suggests there is a simple and easy way that helps people to stop over-eating. They say that using smaller plates, knives, forks, glasses and other tableware could reduce the amount of food we eat. If we use a large plate, we fill the plate with food, which often means we eat too much. Research from Cambridge University in the U.K. suggests that smaller plates could lower the amount of food we eat.
Food Crime
There is a new and growing danger with the food we eat. Criminal gangs are selling billions of dollars of fake food to supermarkets around the world. The food could be very dangerous. This could seriously harm or kill people with peanut allergies. Gangs can make a lot of money from fake food. Food crime is very similar to the drugs trade. Police in 33 countries showed that food crime is a serious international problem. It was a difficult problem to tackle. It said that using technology might be the only way to beat the criminal gangs.
Food Waste
The U.S. city of Seattle is introducing a system to fine people who waste food. People will get a $1 fine if more than 10 per cent of their garbage is food. Businesses will get a $50 fine. Americans waste around 40 per cent of the food they buy. The city hopes its new fines will bring this figure down. The Seattle Public Utilities department said the new garbage disposal system should make people more aware that recycling is important. It will be up to garbage collectors to decide if a house or business gets a fine. The collectors will look inside garbage bins to see how much food waste they contain. They can then add $1 or $50 to the next garbage bill.
